THE DAILY OKLAHOMAN WEDNESDAY, IIAY 16. 2001 7-D Jj NEWS Deaths Mother sentenced for risking baby's life Attempt to smother infant to gain sympathy results in prison term ligent but has a slight speech problem. Before the sentencing, the judge watched a hospital videotape of the baby's legs kicking from under a blanket held over his head by Roseberry. On the video, the father comes out of the rest room and leaves the room to get help. Nurse Deborah Parris testified she found the baby's lips blue because his oxygen supply had been cut off.
The video camera was installed in the baby's hospital room after doctors and nurses determined the baby was healthy and should not be having seizures of any kind. The baby had been admitted to the hospital two days earlier, supposedly for apnea. Dr. Jill Warren said they could not determine a reason the baby kept turning blue and passing out. This was the baby's third trip to the hospital for similar problems.
Warren said the baby was in a life-threatening situation that could have been fatal. Nurse Zerita Denmark testified she found the baby not breathing. His color had changed to dark blue or purple, she said. "He was very dark," Denmark said. "He was not moving.
The mother was in the room and she wasn't trying to resuscitate him. She was calm. "I was really afraid he was too far gone." Dr. Jeanette Zamberlin, Roseberry's psychologist, testified the defendant was suffering from depression and anxiety, "She expressed grief about not having a baby in her home and loss of rights to ever be a parent," Zamberlin said. "She is a person in need of treatment." Roseberry pleaded no contest to two counts of child abuse.
Lane asked the judge to send Roseberry to prison for 10 years and another 10 years on probation. In asking for a suspended sentence, Gonshor-said, "She has already lost her child. I think incarceration is too severe." By Diana Baldwin Staff Writer With her husband holding her, Jodie Deann Roseberry sat crying in her wheelchair after she was sentenced Tuesday to two years in prison for trying to smother their 8-month-old son. Oklahoma County District Judge Tammy Bass-Jones also gave Roseberry eight years' probation after she is released from prison. Assistant District Attorney Wes Lane said Roseberry's crimes were a case of Munchausen syndrome by proxy, a personality disorder in which parents.
injure their children or fabricate illnesses to gain attention or sympathy for themselves. Defense attorney Jerome Gonshor said he had hoped for a suspended sentence because he believes Roseberry, 30, has mental problems. He said his client was "viciously sexually and physically abused" as a child. Lane said, "I think it is important that this woman receive some consequences for placing her baby at risk 30 times in a 2V2-month period. Beyond that, I'm not going to question the court's judgment." Eric Lee Roseberry, the father, refused to comment as deputies took his wife to jail.
"She's" not guilty," said Jodie Willoughby, Roseberry's mother. "I was there. I was awake." The Roseberrys' parental rights were terminated in an earlier jury trial. The child abuse occurred at Children's Hospital of Oklahoma during the 1998 Christmas holiday. The couple's child, now 3, is healthy and intel Crown Heights Baptist Church (Guardian North).

'Rifleman accepts prosecution's deal Carnegie honors OU professor By The Associated Press BOSTON Accused mobster Stephen "The Rifleman" Flemmi has struck a deal with prosecutors in which he will serve 10 years in prison on racketeering, extortion and money laundering charges, prosecutors confirmed Tuesday. The U.S.
Attorney's office said Flemmi will plead guilty to the lesser charges but will not admit to a portion of the racketeering indictment that charges him with four 1967 murders. The plea deal does not require him to cooperate with government investigators. Flemmi, 66, will plead guilty today before U.S. District Judge Mark L. Wolf to racketeering, extortion and money laundering charges in exchange for a recommended sentence of 10 years behind bars, said Samantha Martin, a spokeswoman for the U.S.
Attorney's office. However, Flemmi, an FBI informant for nearly 30 years, will not plead guilty to the 1967 murders of brothers Edward, Walter and William Bennett, all from Boston's Dorchester neighborhood. Under the deal, Flemmi will plead guilty to a 1999 obstruction of justice case that also charges his longtime FBI handler, John J. Connolly with tipping him and cohort James "Whitey" Bulger to the 1995 indictment, prompting Bulger to flee, and a 1997 case charging Flemmi with money laundering. He has been in prison since January 1995, and a 10-year sentence would add only about 3'2 years to Flemmi's time behind bars.
Flemmi and Bulger also face murder charges in the 1981 slaying of millionaire and World Jai Alai owner Roger Wheeler in Tulsa and the 1982 killing of financier John "Jack" Callahan in Miami, Fla. Flemmi still faces an indictment returned last year that charges him with killing 10 people including former girlfriend Debra Davis and Deborah Hussey, Flemmi's 26-year-old stepdaughter between 1973 and 1985. James Bulger is charged with killing 19 people. Flemmi, Bulger, New England mob boss Francis "Cadillac Frank" Salemme and others were first indicted in the racketeering case by the federal government in 1995. Bulger and Flemmi also are charged with drug trafficking.
Attorneys did not return telephone calls seeking comment. By Scott Cooper Staff Writer A University of Oklahoma professor received a prestigious award Tuesday to study Russia's future. Brian Taylor, assistant professor of political science, was named one of 16 Carnegie Scholars by the Carnegie Corp. Taylor will receive up to $100,000 over the next two years to pursue his field of interest, Russian politics. "I'm sort of surprised," Taylor said Tuesday.
"The two people who got it last year were senior professors. I'm just an assistant." Titled "State Power and Russia's Regions," Taylor's project will examine the creation of the Russian state and conditions necessary for it to be effective and democratic. "I'm working at how Russia is trying to create a coherent and effective state in the aftermath of the collapse of the Soviet Union," Taylor said. "In the last 10 years, Russia is weakening from the center and could go the same way as the Soviet Union." Russia had been one of the key states of the Soviet Union. Taylor will focus his research on the role key state power institutions, specifically law enforcement structures, play at the local and regional level.
"I'm looking at how governors and local officials interact with various officials," he said. "That should tell the future of the Russian state." The scholarship will pay for research, salaries and travel expenses. Taylor is part of the second class of Carnegie Scholars, created in 1999 to support groundbreaking research that expands the intellectual margins of the corporation's programs. Taylor has completed his third year at OU. He received a doctorate from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, a master's degree from the London School of Economics and a bachelor's degree from the University of Iowa.
